As a Weight Management Dietitian I am here to help you along your weight loss journey with my top ten tips to losing weight and improving your health.

The most successful way to losing weight (& keeping it off) is by using up more energy than you intake from food & drink.

This is best explained by energy (calorie) balance:

The following tips are here to ensure that you have more ‘output’ than ‘intake’ to result in successful weight loss:

Tip 1: Follow a healthy balanced diet to ensure you are getting all the nutrients, vitamins & minerals your body needs.

Tip 2: Portion Control.

Use a smaller plate (approx 10”) & divide into 3 sections:

¼ protein, ¼ carbohydrate & ½ vegetables.

Tip 3: Ensure your diet is high in fibre – wholegrain rice/pasta/cereals, fruit, vegetables & pulses. They keep you fuller for longer helping you control portion sizes and reduce snacking.

Tip 4: Aim for 2 litres of water per day…

Did you know that your body can mistake you for being hungry when you’re actually thirsty?

Tip 5: Opt for healthy snacks less than 100 calories:

Tip 6: Have 3 regular meals per day to maintain energy levels & ensure your metabolism is working properly:

Breakfast: Within 1 hour of waking

Lunch: 4-5 hours later

Evening Meal: 4-5 hours later

Tip 7: Plan your meals!

We are an era of busy lifestyles that resort to high calorie convenience foods. Complete a weekly meal planner & shopping list and save on money & calories!

Tip 8: Track your progress. Keep a daily food dairy & weigh yourself once per week.

(Aim for 1-2lb weight loss/week)

Tip 9: Resist comfort eating & cravings!

Research has shown that if your can occupy yourself for 15-20mins your urge to eat will pass! – Try it!

Tip 10: Be active for at least 60 minutes per day.

Aim for 80% aerobic activity & 20% muscle-strengthening activity.

Question: “How do I get a toned tummy?”

Answer: Unfortunately it is difficult to target specific parts of the body to tone/reduce. However, overall weight loss will help you shift the layer of fat and abdominal exercises will help strengthen the stomach wall to achieve a flat toned tummy!

Here are some abdominal exercises to try at home:

The Plank

Hold for 10 – 40 seconds; Repeat x5/day

The Boat

Hold for 5-10 breaths; Repeat x3/day

The Bicycle Crunch

Repeat on both sides; For 1 minute x3/day
